Is it safe to drive from Darwin to Alice Springs?
The drive between Darwin and Alice Springs is a straight 1500km stretch following the Stuart Highway and there are plenty of things to see and do to break up the trip. It's recommended that you take at least three days to make the most of the journey and travel safely.
Is the road from Darwin to Alice Springs sealed?
Despite its sparse population, it has a network of sealed roads which connect Darwin and Alice Springs, the major population centres, the neighboring states, and some other centres such as Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. Many unsealed (dirt) roads connect the remoter settlements.

NT/SA border rest area - Almost half way between Alice Springs and Coober Pedy the border rest stop has showers, toilets and BBQs, and it is FREE. Agnes Creek Rest Area - is free but there are no facilities. Public toilets and showers are located in Marla to the south.
The Marbles sit on both sides of the Stuart Highway. It's pretty easy to find – if you're going north or south between Darwin and Alice Springs, you have to drive right through the middle of Karlu Karlu. Don't whiz straight past on your way to Tennant Creek or wherever.
The Barrow Creek Hotel is on the road between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek and is a popular stop for travellers along the highway.
The drive between Alice Springs and Uluru is an absolute must-do, taking travellers through the heart of the country. And it's not a long one, either - the one-way trip from Alice Springs to Uluru is just 450km/5.5 hours on fully-sealed roads.
Where does the Ghan stop? The Ghan Expedition starts in Darwin and stops at Katherine, Alice Springs, Uluru (optional upgrade), Manguri, Coober Pedy and Adelaide. The Ghan starts in either Adelaide or Darwin, with northbound and southbound trips stopping at Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs, Marla, Manguri and Adelaide.

Elliott, the halfway point between Darwin and Alice Springs, 250 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, is predominantly a service provider to surrounding pastoralists.
There really is no need for 4WD to do Alice > Uluru > Kings Canyon. You won't miss very much and really if you are coming to NT for the first time you will be so in awe of everything anyway that you wont need to do 4WD.
