Is Tokyo a good family vacation?
Tokyo is a fantastic city for kids and it's far and away the most interesting destination in Japan for families. It has an incredible array of attractions and kid-friendly destinations (beyond Disneyland) that could easily keep a family very busy for a week or more.
What city should I stay in Japan?
The best places to stay are Shinjuku, the Tokyo Station Area, Ginza/Hibiya, Shibuya or Roppongi. Other decent places to stay include Nihombashi, Shinagawa, Hamamatsucho and Shiodome. Try to stay near a Yamanote Line (Tokyo loop line) station.
Ryokan are Japanese style inns found throughout the country, especially in hot spring resorts.
The best time to visit Japan is during spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). This is when Japan is at its most vibrant, with delicate cherry blossom or bright red leaves adding contrast to the scenery. Remember, it can also be very crowded at this time.
Busy Seasons -- Japanese have a passion for travel, and they generally travel at the same time, resulting in jampacked trains and hotels. The worst times to travel are around New Year's, from the end of December to January 4; Golden Week, from April 29 to May 5; and during the Obon Festival, about a week in mid-August.
Shibuya and Shinjuku areas are both great at different points depending on what you need. For night out, Shinjuku could be better choice while Shibuya offers better options for shoppers. Each areas are only 5 mins away by train so it is very possible to visit them both in a day.
