What is the oldest building in Lima?
Casa de Aliaga is the oldest colonial mansion in Lima, dating back to the 16th century. The house has been owned and lived in by the Aliaga family and their descendants since Franzisco Pizarro granted the land to Jerónimo de Aliaga in 1535.

The Historic Centre of Lima, known as the “Ciudad de los Reyes” (City of Kings), is located in the Rimac valley, and was founded by Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro in January 1535 on the territories led by the Chiefdom of Rimac.

This house was constructed in the 18th century by the Riva Agüero family, whose last member, the intellectual José de la Riva-Agüero, donated it to the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.

Peru - Poverty and wealth. Despite years of promises and billions in social programs, the bulk of Peru's population (54 percent) lives in poverty, according to the CIA World Factbook. The contrasts between rich and poor are clearly seen in Lima, the capital, which has more than doubled in size in the past 2 decades.

Casuarinas is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in all of Peru, with houses that cost more than US$5 million. From the top of the hill where the Wall of Shame sits, one can see scores of green areas and pools.

The newly named City of Kings was not named after the Spanish king, but because the founding of the city fell on the day of a religious holiday. Pizarro chose the name because Lima was founded during the Catholic holiday of Three Kings Day.
